History Fact: First established as a Federal holiday in 1868 as “Decoration Day” to remember and honor the military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The name “Memorial Day” was first attested in 1882, and gradually became more common than Decoration Day after World War II. Memorial Day became the official name in 1967, and the official observation was moved to the last Monday in May in 1968.
